As a first step of the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to numb the gums. Thorough dental cleaning is done to remove any kind of buildup.
After that, gum tissues are trimmed, reshaped, contoured, or removed as required. For this step of the procedure, tools like a laser, scalpel, periodontal knife, electrocautery are used. Depending on the patient’s requirements and the surgery’s goal, tools may differ.
As the last step, a soft tissue laser is used to seal the gums or dressing is placed over gums. As there are no stitches involved, there’s no discomfort, pain, or bleeding involved as well as there’s minimal recovery for gingivoplasty.
Normally, gingivoplasty is performed as a cosmetic procedure. However, in many cases, it is performed in addition to other orthodontic procedures. In such cases, the procedure and recovery period may differ.
